In short: Developed following the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, the Heckler & Koch PSG1 was engineered to solve a critical failure in police capability. By transforming the G3 battle rifle into a specialized precision tool, H&K created a platform that balanced high-capacity fire with the accuracy required for high-stakes hostage rescue.

The PSG1, or Präzisionsschützengewehr, emerged as a direct response to the inability of West German police to neutralize terrorists during the 1972 Summer Olympics. Law enforcement required a weapon that offered both the rapid follow-up shots of a semi-automatic and the surgical precision of a sniper rifle. Heckler & Koch met this challenge by modifying their existing G3 battle rifle, which utilizes a roller-delayed blowback system. To achieve the necessary performance, they reinforced the receiver and introduced semi-cylindrical locking rollers to ensure more consistent bolt positioning.

While modern bolt-action rifles have since surpassed its performance, the PSG1 was once considered among the world's most accurate semi-automatic sniper rifles, maintaining a shot-to-shot variation better than 1 minute of angle when using match ammunition. Its design is highly ergonomic, featuring a heavy free-floating barrel, a fully adjustable stock, and a removable trigger unit that allows for significant customization. The rifle lacks iron sights, originally shipping with a specialized Hensoldt 6×42 scope capable of bullet drop compensation up to 600 meters.

Evolution continued in 2006 with the PSG1A1, which addressed practical limitations of the original design. The cocking handle was repositioned to prevent interference with larger optics, and the Hensoldt scope—notorious for its battery issues and lack of service support in the United States—was replaced by a Schmidt & Bender 3–12×50 model. Meanwhile, the MSG90 variant was introduced as a lighter, more cost-effective militarized version. By utilizing a shorter, contoured barrel and different trigger packs, the MSG90 serves as a designated marksman rifle, proving that the core engineering of the PSG1 could be adapted for diverse tactical roles.
