How a hardcore gamer's quest for difficulty became a massive media franchise
In short: When 35-year-old office worker Kenichi Yamada sought an extreme difficulty setting, he found more than just a challenge. His choice of 'Hell Mode' triggered a reincarnation into a world of serfdom, spawning a massive light novel series with over 1.6 million copies in circulation by late 2024.
The series, written by Hamuo and illustrated by Mo, began its journey on the user-generated website Shōsetsuka ni Narō on November 17, 2019. The narrative follows Kenichi Yamada, a veteran MMORPG player disillusioned by casual-friendly modern gaming. After selecting an extreme difficulty setting, he is reborn as Allen, a boy born into a family of serfs with no wealth or status. The original web novel was published on the Shōsetsuka ni Narō platform. This work was eventually picked up by Earth Star Entertainment under their specific novel imprint.
The story focuses on Allen's struggle to master the Summoner class, a role with immense potential that requires significant effort to develop. Using his previous life's memories and wits, he undergoes rigorous training from early childhood to improve his family's circumstances and escape their social standing. This concept drove the series to secure the 2020 2nd Earth Star Novel Award's top honour. Allen relies on his strategic intellect and prior experiences to navigate this brutal environment. He focuses on the Summoner class to overcome his impoverished beginnings.
The franchise has expanded significantly through various media. A manga adaptation by Enji Tetta began serialization in October 2020 and had reached fourteen tankōbon volumes by July 2026. The anime television series, produced by Yokohama Animation Laboratory, aired its first season from January 10 to March 28, 2026, followed by a second season from July 4 to September 26, 2026. A third season has since been announced, set to cover the S-Rank Dungeon Conquest Arc. The manga was released through the Comic Earth Star digital service. Additionally, the anime's first season was broadcast on Tokyo MX and several other networks.
