The meteoric rise and tragic unraveling of the R&B quintet Hi-Five
In short: Formed in Waco, Texas, in 1989, Hi-Five captured the pop charts with their 1991 number one hit, The Kissing Game. Yet, behind the platinum success lay a turbulent history of legal battles, member turnover, and profound personal tragedies that eventually led the group to disband and later reunite in honor.
Originally established as a trio by childhood friends Tony Thompson, Russell Neal, and Toriano Easley, the group expanded to a quintet under the guidance of Jive Records. Their 1990 eponymous debut, produced by Teddy Riley, achieved platinum status and launched them into superstardom. The group's success was defined by chart-topping singles like I Like the Way (The Kissing Game), which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. However, the group's stability was short-lived, as internal conflicts and external circumstances began to fracture the lineup almost immediately.
The group faced a series of devastating setbacks. Toriano Easley was forced to depart due to legal issues, and Russell Neal left following financial disputes with the label. Tragedy struck when Roderick Pooh Clark was involved in a vehicle collision that left him paralyzed. Later, a failed transition to Giant Records saw the label pivot its focus solely toward lead singer Tony Thompson, causing the group to dissolve. Thompson eventually attempted to revive the brand in 2005 with new vocalists, sparking a legal conflict with original members.
The aftermath of the group's dissolution was marked by further hardship. In 2007, Tony Thompson died in his native Waco from the toxic effects of inhaling freon. In 2011, Treston Irby pursued a solo career, but by 2012, original members Irby, Shannon Gill, and Marcus Sanders reformed the group to honor Thompson's legacy. The group's history remains a complex narrative of musical achievement overshadowed by personal loss, including the 2014 murder charge against Russell Neal and the 2022 death of Roderick Pooh Clark at age 49.
