In short: Most expansion franchises spend decades struggling to find their footing, often languishing in the bottom of the standings. The Houston Astros have defied this trend entirely, evolving from a 1960s underdog into a modern dynasty that holds a unique distinction as the only expansion-era team with more wins than losses.

The journey to the top began with a failed revolution. In the late 1950s, local leaders like Judge Roy Hofheinz attempted to create a new league called the Continental League after MLB refused to expand. When that collapsed in 1960, the National League finally granted Houston an expansion franchise for the 1962 season. They debuted as the Colt .45s, playing in temporary facilities before moving into the iconic Astrodome in 1965.

For years, the team was defined by architectural firsts rather than trophies. The Astrodome introduced 'AstroTurf' because grass could not survive under the roof, and it became a global landmark known as the 'Eighth Wonder of the World.' Despite high attendance, the team remained largely mediocre for decades, struggling to find consistency until a major shift in ownership and philosophy occurred.

The modern era began in 2011 when Jim Crane purchased the team for $680 million. Under his leadership, the Astros pioneered advanced analytical technologies and sabermetrics, transforming into a powerhouse. This shift resulted in a historic run: they appeared in seven consecutive American League Championship Series from 2017 to 2023 and won the 2017 World Series. They are now the only team to win postseason series in seven straight years.

Today, their record of 5,096–5,040–5 stands as a testament to this evolution. By reaching 5,000 wins in 2024, they became the second expansion team to hit that milestone and the only one with an overall winning percentage above .500. They also hold the rare distinction of being the first team to win pennants in both the National and American Leagues.
