In short: In the 2011 series Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Homura Akemi is a mysterious figure who exists to prevent a tragic fate. Driven by a desire to save Madoka Kaname, she has repeated nearly 100 timelines, becoming a veteran magical girl defined by her struggle and internal conflict.

Created by writer Gen Urobuchi, Homura was designed to contrast with the series' titular character, Madoka Kaname. While Madoka represents a character who begins moving forward, Homura is characterized by her inability to move past a single point due to her time-manipulation powers. Homura has relived almost 100 timelines while attempting to stop Madoka from signing a contract with the messenger Kyubey.

Homura's magic is centered around a shield containing a sand timer. This device can manipulate time for at least one month, though the mechanics remain somewhat mysterious; if the sand disappears, she can no longer manipulate time, though she can still travel back in time. Urobuchi has described her as the strongest magical girl, provided no one discovers how she utilizes her powers.

In the 2013 sequel film, Rebellion, Homura transitions from a supporting role to the sole main protagonist. The film explores her growth and internal conflict as she confronts Madoka. While she proclaims herself a Demon, she undergoes significant internal struggle, a complexity that has earned her high rankings in various anime character polls and the attention of literary scholars.

The character's design, by Ume Aoki, emphasizes a 'silent beauty' and a dark, monochromatic aesthetic. Her most distinguishing feature is her long, silky hair. The character's depth is further enhanced by details like the black wings she sprouts in the series' final episode, an addition by production designers Gekidan Inu Curry.
