From a Beatles encounter to the Royal Shakespeare Company: The career of Isla Blair
In short: Born in India and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Isla Blair has spent decades as a fixture of British stage and screen. From a lost scene in a Beatles film to acclaimed Shakespearean roles, her career reflects the evolving landscape of mid-century and contemporary British performance.
Isla Blair Glover, born in Bangalore on 29 September 1944, began her path toward the arts early, famously performing an impromptu song during a ship voyage to the United Kingdom at age two. Her stage work soon expanded to include the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1971, where she appeared in productions such as The Man of Mode and Subject to Fits.
Her film career began with a brush with fame in the 1964 Beatles film A Hard Day's Night. Blair filmed a scene with Paul McCartney, but the footage was ultimately cut from the final release. The experience was memorable for the wrong reasons; after McCartney offered her a ride home, the pair were swarmed by fans, leaving Blair physically assaulted by the crowd. She wisely declined a second ride the following day. Her subsequent filmography is extensive, ranging from the 1965 horror Dr. Terror's House of Horrors to a 1989 appearance in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where she was credited as Mrs. Glover, reflecting her real-life marriage to actor Julian Glover.
Blair's television work has been equally diverse, spanning decades of British drama. She appeared in the 1970s cult series Space: 1999 and took on the role of Sally in the 1978 alternative history serial An Englishman's Castle. Later, she became known for her performance as Flora Beniform in the 1981 adaptation of The History Man and as Claire Carlsen in the 1995 political drama The Final Cut. Beyond acting, Blair has been a dedicated contributor to the arts community, including her work with the Salisbury Playhouse and her roles as vice president and trustee for the Actors' Children's Trust.
