In short: Launched in 1998 with a massive £221 million budget, ITV2 was never meant to be just a youth channel. Originally a mixed-genre service featuring heavyweights like Trevor McDonald, it underwent a massive repositioning to become the entertainment hub for the 16–34 demographic we recognize today.

When ITV2 debuted on 7 December 1998, its identity was far from the reality-heavy schedule of the modern era. While it aimed to target a younger, male audience, the initial lineup was a curious mix of genres. The channel's launch featured serious current affairs programming, including Sunday night interviews with Trevor McDonald and media analysis by Katie Derham. It even offered live coverage of the UEFA Champions League and various sports, a feature it eventually ditched following the launch of ITV4 in 2005.

The channel's evolution was driven by strategic shifts in the UK's digital broadcasting landscape. Initially, the channel was part of a concerted effort by ITV franchise owners—including Granada, Carlton, and United News & Media—to utilize new digital bandwidth. However, the original plan for a youth-centric format was eventually superseded by a broader, mixed-demographic approach. This uncertainty led to a £500,000 repositioning campaign fronted by Jerry Springer to fix the channel's mixed messaging.

By the mid-2000s, the channel's direction had solidified into the entertainment-focused model seen today. In June 2004, ITV plc doubled the channel's programming budget to lean more heavily into American series and movies. This shift helped cement its status as a primary destination for the 16–34 age group, featuring high-profile imports like Family Guy and Bob's Burgers alongside original reality hits like Love Island and Celebrity Juice.
