In short: In the 7th century, the Arab conquest brought Islam to the Persian plateau. Yet, rather than being absorbed by Arab culture, the Persians used their scholarly mastery to reshape the faith, creating a distinct 'Persian Islam' that would eventually spread across the globe.

The Islamization of Iran was a centuries-long process of gradual conversion. Following the 7th-century Arab conquest and the fall of the Sasanian Empire, the Iranian population underwent a slow religious shift. While the 10th century saw most Persians become Muslim, the country remained predominantly Sunni for much of the next several centuries. It was not until the early 16th century, under the Safavid dynasty, that Twelver Shi'a Islam was established as the state religion through state-sponsored campaigns.

This transition was characterized by a unique cultural phenomenon: Iran was Islamized but not Arabized. While adopting the new faith, Persians worked to protect their language and identity through a process known as Persianization. This era, often associated with the Islamic Golden Age, saw Iranian scholars and scientists—such as Avicenna and Al-Farabi—make monumental contributions to medicine, philosophy, and even the rules of Arabic grammar. This 'Persian Islam' (or Islam-i Ajam) eventually became the version of the faith exported to the Turks and India.

Today, the religious landscape of Iran is complex and subject to debate. While official figures and some surveys suggest a vast Muslim majority (with some estimates as high as 99.6%), recent reports from GAMAAN indicate a sharp decline in self-identified religiosity, with only 40% of respondents identifying as Muslim in 2020. Despite these shifts in personal identity, the Twelver Shi'a branch remains the official state religion and the foundation of the legal system established after the 1979 Revolution.
