How a masked dance crew turned hip-hop into a Las Vegas headliner
In short: In 2008, a group of dancers won America's Best Dance Crew, but they brought a strange secret to the stage: white masks and gloves. By erasing their individual identities, the Jabbawlarockeez transformed from a San Diego crew into a global theatrical phenomenon.
Founded in 2003 by Kevin "KB" Brewer and Joe Larot, the Jabbawockeez began with a mission to balance musicality with pure artistic expression. Their signature aesthetic—white masks and gloves—was a tribute to the 1990s San Francisco crew Medea Sirkas. This visual choice serves a deeper philosophy: by obscuring their faces, the dancers ensure the audience focuses on the collective movement rather than individual personalities. As member Jeff "Phi" Nguyen explains, the mask allows them to perform as one unified entity.
The group's rise was marked by both triumph and tragedy. During their winning 2008 season of America's Best Dance Crew, the lineup was forced to change when a member died and another suffered a knee injury. Winning a $100,000 award, the team achieved a milestone in 2010 by launching MÜS.I.C., the inaugural dance troupe to lead a Las Vegas production. located at the Monte Carlo Resort and Casino.
By merging street arts such as b-boying and popping with original, coordinated beats, they perform a technique they call "Beat-Kune-Do". This musical innovation led to the creation of JBWKZ Records, the first label dedicated to producing music specifically for dancers. From performing for 35,000 people at the Gator Growl in 2009 to sustaining long-term residencies like "TIMELESS" at the MGM Grand, the Jabbawockeez have transitioned from reality TV winners to pillars of the Las Vegas entertainment industry.
