In short: From a crowded household in Honolulu to the bright lights of college football, Jayden Maiava is rewriting the playbook. After navigating high school moves and a sudden transfer decision, he has become the first Polynesian quarterback to start for the USC Trojans, proving his mettle in high-stakes comeback victories.

Born on April 6, 2003, in Honolulu, Hawaii, Jayden Ikaika Maiava grew up in Pālolo within a large extended family of over 20 members. His path to collegiate stardom was marked by significant movement between Hawaii and Nevada. After attending Sierra Vista High School in Las Vegas, he returned to Honolulu for Kaimuki High School, where in 2019 he recorded 3,317 passing yards and 41 touchdowns. Following a pandemic-related season cancellation in 2020, he returned to Nevada to attend Liberty High School in Henderson.

Maiava's collegiate journey began at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). After redshirting in 2022, he stepped in for an injured Doug Brumfield during the 2023 season. His performance earned him Mountain West Freshman of the Year honors and an all-conference second team selection. Despite initial plans to stay at UNLV, he entered the transfer portal on January 1, 2024. In a rapid series of shifts, he briefly committed to the University of Georgia before flipping his decision the very next day to join the USC Trojans.

He has demonstrated remarkable resilience, leading the Trojans to a 28–20 victory over Nebraska in his first start and a 35–31 comeback win in the 2024 Las Vegas Bowl. By the end of the 2025 season, his statistical output reached 3,711 passing yards and 24 touchdowns, earning him a spot as a semifinalist for the Davey O'Brien Award. His football lineage is notable, with his uncle Kaluka Maiava playing linebacker for USC from 2005 to 2008, and his great-grandfather being professional wrestler Neff Maiava.
