In short: Born in Nuku‘alofa and raised across the Pacific and Utah, Kalani Sitake has redefined the BYU football program. As the first former pupil of the legendary LaVell Edwards to lead the team, he has navigated the school from independent status into the competitive Big 12 Conference while mentoring elite NFL talent.

Kalani Sitake’s journey to the head coaching position at Brigham Young University is marked by a deep connection to the program’s history. After playing fullback for the Cougars in 1994, he paused his athletic career to serve a two-year mission in Oakland, California. He returned to complete his degree in English in 2000 and briefly joined the Cincinnati Bengals, but a back injury forced him to retire from professional play prematurely. This transition shifted his focus toward coaching, beginning at Eastern Arizona College in 2001.

His path back to Provo was circuitous, involving stints at Southern Utah University and a decade-long tenure at the University of Utah. Under the guidance of Kyle Whittingham, Sitake climbed the ranks from linebackers coach to defensive coordinator by 2009. During this time, he made history as the first Tongan defensive coordinator in the Football Bowl Subdivision. His reputation for defensive strategy grew, leading to a role as assistant head coach at Oregon State University in 2015 before he was finally tapped to lead his alma mater in 2016.

Since taking the helm, Sitake has become the first FBS head coach of Tongan descent. His tenure has been defined by significant structural changes, most notably the transition of BYU into the Big 12 Conference in 2023. Beyond the tactical shifts, he has cultivated a pipeline of professional talent, including players like Zach Wilson, Fred Warner, and Puka Nacua. His contributions to the sport were formally recognized in 2025 with his induction into the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame, cementing his status as a pivotal figure in the evolution of collegiate football.
