In short: A former professional player turned rising star, Joe Moorhead has navigated massive offensive surges and intense public controversies. From leading Fordham to historic turnarounds to facing dismissal amid player scandals, his journey through college football is a study in high-stakes coaching volatility.

Born in Pittsburgh on November 2, 1973, Joe Moorhead’s path to head coaching was anything but linear. After playing quarterback at Fordham from 1992 to 1995, he took his talents to the Munich Cowboys in the German Football League, playing professionally until 1997. This diverse background set the stage for a coaching career defined by significant statistical leaps and sudden turbulence.

Moorhead first made waves as a head coach at Fordham University. Taking over a team that had gone 1–10, he orchestrated one of the largest turnarounds in FCS history, leading the Rams to a 6–5 record in 2012. By 2013, the program achieved its best start ever with ten consecutive victories. His success caught the attention of major programs, leading him to serve as offensive coordinator at Penn State, where he boosted offensive output from 348.4 yards per game in 2015 to 432.6 yards per game in 2016.

However, his tenure at Mississippi State University was marked by intense scrutiny. While he achieved an 8–4 record in his first year, his second season was marred by a scandal involving 10 players who used a tutor to complete coursework, resulting in eight-game suspensions. Despite a dramatic 21–20 victory over Ole Miss in the 2019 Egg Bowl that secured bowl eligibility, Moorhead was fired on January 3, 2020, following a 6–7 season and controversy regarding a player's injury. He eventually returned to the University of Akron as head coach in 2022.
