This performance led to his selection by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 2000 NFL draft.
Ulbrich played for the 49ers from 2000 until his retirement in 2009, a career marked by several injuries, including a torn biceps in 2005 and a concussion that prompted his departure from the field. Transitioning immediately into coaching, he spent time with the Seattle Seahawks and UCLA, where he served as defensive coordinator and helped develop future NFL talent like Anthony Barr and Eric Kendricks. His coaching career eventually brought him to the Atlanta Falcons, where he was part of the staff that reached Super Bowl LI in 2016.
In 2021, Ulbrich joined the New York Jets as defensive coordinator under Robert Saleh. Following Saleh's firing in October 2024, Ulbrich stepped into the role of interim head coach, finishing his tenure with a 3-9 record. He returned to the Atlanta Falcons as defensive coordinator in 2025. Beyond the field, Ulbrich's personal life faced tragedy when his wife, Cristina, passed away from cancer in July 2026. His professional life also saw controversy in 2025, when his son was involved in a prank call during the NFL draft, resulting in significant fines for both Ulbrich and the Falcons organization due to the mishandling of confidential draft information.
