The tragic hero who traded his crown and family for a single, terrible vow
In short: Born to a goddess and a king, Devavrata was the rightful heir to the Kuru throne. Yet, he sacrificed his birthright and celibacy to secure his father’s marriage, earning the name Bhishma. This legendary figure became a master strategist, a reluctant warrior, and a tragic guardian of a crumbling dynasty.
Bhishma, originally named Devavrata, was the son of King Shantanu and the river goddess Ganga. His life changed when his father fell in love with a fisherwoman named Satyavati. To ensure her father would allow the marriage, Devavrata renounced his claim to the throne and swore a lifelong vow of celibacy. This act of extreme devotion earned him the moniker Bhishma, meaning one who undertakes a fierce vow. As a reward, his father granted him the boon of Ichcha Mrityu, the power to choose the moment of his own death.
Throughout his long life, Bhishma served as a regent and chief advisor to the Kuru rulers. His adherence to duty was absolute, even when it conflicted with his personal sense of justice. He trained the royal princes in statecraft and warfare, yet he was forced to navigate the bitter rivalry between his grand-nephews, the Pandavas and the Kauravas. Despite his wisdom and his efforts to mediate their disputes, his unwavering loyalty to the throne compelled him to fight for the Kauravas during the catastrophic Kurukshetra War.
On the tenth day of the war, the Pandava prince Arjuna defeated Bhishma with the help of Shikhandi. He fell upon a bed of arrows, where he remained for fifty-one days. During this final period, he shared his vast knowledge of governance and dharma with both sides of the conflict. He eventually passed away on the winter solstice, an auspicious time known as Uttarayana. Today, his legacy is commemorated annually on Bhishma Ashtami, marking the anniversary of his death.
