In short: Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in 1966, Klaw began as a human scientist obsessed with Wakandan vibranium. After murdering the nation's ruler, he lost his hand and replaced it with a sonic emitter, eventually evolving into a living, immortal entity composed entirely of solidified sound.

Ulysses Klaw, also known as Ulysses Klaue, is a Marvel supervillain whose origins are tied to the African nation of Wakanda. The son of a Nazi war criminal, Klaw became a physicist specializing in applied sonics. His primary ambition was to perfect a sound transducer capable of converting sound waves into physical mass. To power this invention, he infiltrated Wakanda to steal vibranium, a rare metal found only in the region's meteoric deposits. During this mission, he killed the Wakandan leader T'Chaka, only to lose his own right hand in a retaliatory attack by T'Chaka's son, T'Challa.

Returning years later, Klaw utilized a molybdenum steel sonic emitter as a prosthetic to replace his missing limb. This device allows him to project high-volume sonic waves and create complex physical constructs. His transformation into a being of solid sound was achieved through a separate device of his own design. While this state grants him superhuman durability and the ability to sense his surroundings via sonar, it also leaves him susceptible to vibranium, which can cause his form to collapse. Furthermore, his existence as pure sonic energy has historically left him vulnerable to bouts of insanity if he remains without a humanoid form for extended periods.

Klaw's career has been marked by shifting alliances and repeated defeats at the hands of the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. He has served in various villainous groups, including the Masters of Evil and the Frightful Four. His physical state has fluctuated significantly over decades of comic book history; he has been dissolved by Dazzler, reconstituted by Doctor Doom, and even had his consciousness projected onto the universe's 'sound wall' after a detonation. Despite these setbacks, he remains a persistent threat, consistently ranked by critics as one of the most iconic and powerful adversaries in the Black Panther rogues' gallery.
