How a Denver businessman built a global sports and entertainment empire from the ground up
In short: Stan Kroenke turned a single sports holding company into a massive conglomerate spanning professional leagues, stadiums, media networks, and even theme parks. From the NFL to the Premier League, his influence reshapes how fans consume sports, control venues, and interact with the teams they follow across multiple continents.
Founded in 1999 as Kroenke Sports Enterprises, the Denver-based company began as a vehicle for Stan Kroenke’s sports investments. His early moves included acquiring the NBA’s Denver Nuggets and the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche in 2000. Over the following decades, the firm aggressively expanded its portfolio, securing ownership of the Colorado Mammoth and the Colorado Rapids. By 2010, the company achieved full control of the NFL’s St. Louis Rams, a move that necessitated complex ownership restructuring to comply with league regulations regarding multi-market team control.
The company’s reach extends far beyond North American sports. In 2011, KSE initiated a takeover of the English football club Arsenal, eventually reaching over 90% ownership by 2018. This global footprint is mirrored by an expansive infrastructure strategy. KSE owns or co-owns major venues like Denver’s Ball Arena and London’s Emirates Stadium. Most notably, Kroenke spearheaded the development of SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, a billion-dollar facility that serves as the centerpiece of the Hollywood Park mixed-use project.
KSE also operates a vertically integrated media machine. Through Altitude Sports and Entertainment, the company launched its own regional network in 2004 to broadcast its teams. Its media holdings grew significantly with the 2013 acquisition of the Outdoor Channel and the 2014 formation of the Outdoor Sportsman Group, which encompasses magazines, websites, and television production. While the company experimented with esports through franchises like the Los Angeles Gladiators and the Los Angeles Guerrillas, it has recently exited that sector, refocusing its resources on its core traditional sports and real estate assets.
