The man who rode a bull that shattered his face
In short: In 1995, Tuff Hedeman faced off against Bodacious, a bull so dangerous it developed a specific move to smash riders' faces. Hedeman survived the collision with shattered facial bones and permanent sensory loss, only to return to the arena months later to face his nemesis again.
Tuff Hedeman's career is defined by a transition from a child prodigy to a foundational pillar of professional bull riding. Born in El Paso, Texas, in 1963, he began his rodeo journey at age four. After a growth spurt ended his jockey career at 14, he pivoted to bull riding, eventually becoming a three-time PRCA world champion in 1986, 1989, and 1991. His influence extended beyond the arena; he was a co-founder of the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) and served as its president from 1992 to 2004, helping shape the sport's modern structure.
The defining narrative of his career involves the bull Bodacious. By 1993, Bodacious had developed a terrifying bucking move: bringing his rear up while slamming his head to the ground to lure riders forward, then thrusting his head up with full force. In 1995, during the PBR World Finals, Bodacious executed this move on Hedeman, shattering every major facial bone in his face. The injury was so severe that it resulted in Hedeman permanently losing his senses of smell and taste, requiring several hours of reconstructive surgery.
Despite the trauma, Hedeman's resilience became a hallmark of the sport. Less than two months after his surgery, he returned to the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) to face Bodacious again. At his son's request, he chose to turn the bull out immediately upon leaving the chute, an act that earned him a standing ovation. He remains one of only an estimated seven to ten riders to have ever successfully ridden Bodacious for the required eight seconds, notably achieving a 95-point ride in 1993.
Hedeman's legacy is cemented by his 2020 induction into the Rodeo Hall of Fame and his 2023 ranking as the No. 2 bull rider in PBR history. Following his retirement in 1999—necessitated by a neck injury and herniated disc—he continued to lead the industry as an ambassador and president of Championship Bull Riding (CBR) before founding his own tour in 2018. His career serves as a study in the physical extremes and organizational evolution of modern rodeo.
