How a reality TV winner turned a controversial stage name into mainstream stardom
In short: In 2016, Alyssa Stephens won the first season of The Rap Game. But her journey from a child competition winner to a Billboard chart-topper involved navigating racial controversy, rejecting major label deals, and a strategic rebranding that redefined her identity.
Born in 1998, the Atlanta-based artist originally performed as Miss Mulatto. The name was a reflection of her experiences with bullying as a light-skinned child, but by 2021, she faced significant scrutiny regarding the racially charged nature of the term. This led to a formal rebranding to Latto, a move that coincided with her transition from an independent artist to a major-label star under RCA Records.
Her rise to prominence was fueled by a series of high-performing singles. The 2019 track "Bitch from da Souf" earned double platinum certification and marked her first Billboard Hot 100 entry. She followed this with "Big Energy" in 2021, which reached number three on the Hot 100 and earned triple platinum status. Her ability to collaborate across genres was cemented in 2023 when she appeared on Jung Kook's "Seven," her first song to debut at number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200.
Beyond the music, Latto's career is marked by both commercial milestones and personal resilience. She has navigated legal challenges, including a 2021 arrest at LAX, and has used her platform for philanthropy through her Win Some Give Some Foundation. From her early days in drag racing to her recent inclusion in the 2024 Forbes 30 Under 30 list, her trajectory reflects a calculated evolution from reality television contestant to a global hip-hop figure.
