From Miss USA to David Lynch: the remarkable journey of Laura Harring
In short: She was the first Hispanic woman to win Miss USA, but her path to Hollywood was anything but conventional. After surviving a childhood drive-by shooting and studying theatre in London, she delivered one of the most haunting performances in modern cinema.
Born in 1964 in Los Mochis, Mexico, Laura Elena Harring’s early life was marked by both international movement and sudden trauma. After her parents divorced in 1971, she moved from Sinaloa to Texas. At just 12 years old, she sustained a head wound from a .45 caliber bullet during a stray-fire incident from a drive-by shooting.
Her ascent to fame began through the pageant circuit. After winning titles in El Paso and Texas, she made history in 1985 as the first Hispanic woman to be crowned Miss USA. This visibility led directly to her acting career; NBC producers, having seen her during the pageant broadcast, cast her in the 1987 television film The Alamo: 13 Days to Glory.
While she appeared in various soaps like General Hospital and Sunset Beach, Harring achieved cinematic immortality through her collaboration with director David Lynch. In the 2001 masterpiece Mulholland Drive, she played the dual roles of Rita and Camilla. Her performance was so commanding that critic Roger Ebert noted her ability to command the screen, even comparing her presence to icons like Ava Gardner.
Her diverse career has spanned from playing a Brazilian princess in The Forbidden Dance to portraying a defense attorney in the gritty crime drama The Shield. Beyond the screen, her personal history includes a brief marriage in 1<0xA0>1987 to Count Carl-Eduard von Bismarck-Schönhausen, a descendant of the German statesman Otto von Bismarck.
