In short: Established in 1575, Leiden University is the oldest in the Netherlands. It was founded by William, Prince of Orange, to educate the Northern Netherlands. Ironically, the official foundation document bears the name of Philip II of Spain, William’s arch-rival, who strictly forbade his subjects from studying at the new institution.

Leiden University was born from the fires of the Dutch Revolt. Following the heroic defense of Leiden against Spanish forces in 1574, Prince William founded the university as a reward for the city. At the time, the northern heartland lacked its own higher education, with existing institutions like the University of Leuven trapped under Spanish control. By the 1640s, the university had blossomed into the largest Protestant institution in Europe, attracting over five hundred students from across the continent.

The university’s intellectual pedigree is profound. Within its first fifty years, it hosted luminaries like Hugo Grotius and Baruch Spinoza. Its scientific legacy is equally storied; in 1896, Pieter Zeeman discovered the Zeeman effect there, and Heike Kamerlingh Onnes later established the world’s first low-temperature laboratory, where he liquified helium in 1908. The institution’s archives even hold a manuscript by Albert Einstein on quantum theory, discovered in 2005.

Beyond the lecture halls, the university is steeped in unique traditions. The 'Sweat Room' (Zweetkamertje) serves as a nerve-wracking waiting area for doctoral candidates before their defenses. Since the 18th century, successful graduates have signed its walls as a rite of passage, leaving behind thousands of names, including Winston Churchill and Nelson Mandela. Today, the university operates across two cities, Leiden and The Hague, maintaining its status as a premier research hub with over 100 graduate programs and deep historical roots.
