How an Oxbridge graduate traded linguistics for a BAFTA-nominated acting career
In short: Before becoming a breakout star on Sky Atlantic, Leila Farzad followed a strict academic path. Her parents insisted on an Oxbridge degree before she could pursue the stage, leading her from the halls of Oxford to the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Born in London to Iranian parents, Leila Farzad’s path to the screen was anything but linear. While her interest in performance was sparked by attending National Theatre productions with her aunt, her family required a formal academic foundation first. This led her to Worcester College, Oxford, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in French and Italian Literature. Her upbringing in London provided the cultural backdrop for her artistic interests. This early exposure to the arts proved vital for her future success.
After completing her studies in modern languages, Farzad sought professional training at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, an institution she has described as feeling like home. Her early career was diverse, ranging from providing voice work for the animated series Peppa Pig to making her live-action television debut in the ITV police procedural Law & Order: UK. This marked a significant step in her early professional journey.
Farzad’s professional stage debut occurred at Theatre503, where she played the lead in Miriam. Gonzalez. Durantez. She subsequently appeared in notable productions, including Julius Caesar at the Bridge Theatre and Richard II at Shakespeare's Globe. Her breakthrough came in the Sky Atlantic and HBO Max series I Hate Suzie (2020–2022), where she played Naomi Jones, the manager and friend of the titular character played by Billie Piper. She also appeared in the ITV anthology Innocent. This added further variety to her growing list of television credits.
This performance earned Farzad a British Academy Television Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Since then, she has expanded her portfolio with roles in the BBC crime drama Better (2023), the second season of Avenue 5, and The Fear Index, appearing alongside Josh Hartnett. She has a daughter, born in 2014, with James Maizels. This personal milestone occurred during her rising professional career.
