In short: Established in 1971, Liberty University’s football program set out with the ambitious goal of rivaling college football giants like Notre Dame and Alabama. After decades of navigating lower divisions and conference shifts, the Flames successfully transitioned to the FBS level, eventually securing a major bowl appearance in the 2024 Fiesta Bowl.

Founded by Jerry Falwell and Elmer L. Towns, the program began play in 1973. For years, it operated in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and Division II before spending nearly three decades in the Football Championship Subdivision. The program’s infrastructure faced significant challenges, including the 1985 flood that devastated its practice facility on Treasure Island, necessitating a move to the main campus and the eventual construction of Williams Stadium in 1989.

The program’s trajectory shifted dramatically when it began its transition to the top-tier Football Bowl Subdivision in 2017, achieving full membership by 2019. This era saw the program reach new heights, including its first-ever AP Top 25 ranking in 2020. Under head coach Jamey Chadwell, the team achieved an undefeated regular season in 2023 and captured a Conference USA championship, leading to their first major bowl appearance against the Oregon Ducks on January 1, 2024.

Throughout its history, Liberty has secured nine conference championships, including eight in the Big South and one in Conference USA. The program has produced notable NFL talent, such as Eric Green, the school's first-round pick in 1990, and two-time Super Bowl champion Dwayne Carswell. Today, the Flames maintain long-standing rivalries, including a series with James Madison that is contracted through 2040, representing the longest such agreement in FBS football. With ten head coaches in its history and a 25,000-seat stadium, the program continues to evolve within the competitive landscape of modern college athletics.
