In short: Jazz Ishmael Butler, known as Lil Tracy, emerged from the underground rap scene to define a generation of sound. Born to musical royalty, he chose a path of independence, navigating homelessness and artistic reinvention to become a pivotal figure in the GothBoiClique and a frequent collaborator of Lil Peep.

Born on October 3, 1995, in Teaneck, New Jersey, Jazz Ishmael Butler is the son of Cheryl Gamble, known as Coko from the group SWV, and Ishmael Butler of Digable Planets. Despite his musical lineage, his upbringing was marked by transience, moving between his parents' homes and spending his adolescent years in Seattle. By age 17, Butler chose to be homeless, eventually moving to Los Angeles at 18 without informing his parents to pursue his music career.

Initially performing under the moniker Yung Bruh, he released mixtapes with the Thraxxhouse collective before co-founding GothBoiClique. In mid-2016, he rebranded as Lil Tracy after discovering another artist already used his original name. His career gained significant momentum through his partnership with the late Lil Peep. Their collaboration on the track 'White Tee' brought him underground attention, while his feature on 'Awful Things' from Lil Peep's debut album reached number 79 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Following his breakthrough, Lil Tracy maintained a prolific output. His discography includes several mixtapes and EPs, such as 'Tracy's Manga' and 'Sinner', alongside a series of studio albums. His debut album, 'Anarchy', released in 2019, was dedicated to Lil Peep. He has continued to release projects consistently, including 'Designer Talk 2' in 2020, 'Saturn Child' in 2022, and his fourth album, 'Babyvamp', in 2025. His work remains a testament to the influence of the SoundCloud rap era, blending punk rock sensibilities with Southern hip-hop roots.

The evolution of his sound reflects a deliberate shift from his early 'Yung Bruh' mixtapes to the more structured releases of his later career. Despite the challenges of his early life, including his time in Virginia Beach and his period of homelessness, Butler has solidified his place in modern rap history through his dedication to his craft and his commitment to his artistic vision.
