From NBA dreams to the operating room of hip-hop
In short: Before he was a Billboard chart-topper, Tyler-Justin Anthony Sharpe dreamed of professional basketball and even considered a career as a heart surgeon. His journey from Queens to global stardom reveals how a 12-year-old's pivot toward music reshaped his trajectory into one of the most consistent hitmakers of his generation.
Born in Queens, New York, to Jamaican immigrant parents, Tyler-Justin Anthony Sharpe grew up in Springfield Gardens. His early life was defined by athletic ambition; he initially dreamed of playing in the NBA. However, at age 12, his focus shifted toward music as he became inspired by artists like Chief Keef and Speaker Knockerz. This transition began even earlier, at age 9, when he started rapping over his mic while playing Xbox with friends.
Tecca's rise was marked by rapid commercial success following the release of "Ransom" in May 2019. The track became a massive hit, peaking at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and accumulating over 1.4 billion streams on Spotify. This momentum carried into his debut mixtape, We Love You Tecca (2019), which also peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. Since then, he has maintained a consistent presence in the top ten of the Billboard 200 with every studio album release, including Virgo World (2020), Tec (2023), Plan A (2024), and Dopamine (2025).
Beyond the charts, Tecca's career is characterized by high-profile collaborations and diverse media presence. He has worked with artists ranging from Juice Wrld to Mabel, and his influence extends into gaming as a headliner for Fortnite Festival Season 15 in 2026. Despite this massive scale of fame, he remains grounded in his origins; in 2023 interviews, he noted that had he not chosen rap, he likely would have pursued medicine as a heart surgeon.
