In short: Louis and Zélie Martin were ordinary French parents who raised five daughters to become nuns, including the celebrated Thérèse of Lisieux. Their path to sainthood was unconventional, marked by early struggles to enter religious life, a successful business partnership, and the eventual recognition of miraculous healings by the Catholic Church.

Louis Martin and Zélie Guérin both initially sought monastic lives but were diverted by circumstance. Louis, rejected from the Augustinian monastery for failing to learn Latin, became a watchmaker. Zélie, turned away from the Sisters of Charity due to health issues, established a thriving business manufacturing Alençon lace. They married in 1858, eventually merging their professional lives when Louis sold his shop to partner with his wife in 1870. Their household was defined by a blend of worldly success and intense spiritual discipline, with Louis maintaining a private attic retreat for prayer and meditation.

The couple faced significant tragedy, losing four of their nine children in childhood. Following Zélie’s death from breast cancer in 1877, Louis relocated the family to Lisieux. His later years were marked by severe health decline, including paralyzing strokes and cerebral arteriosclerosis, which necessitated three years of hospitalization. Despite these trials, the family’s legacy persisted through their surviving daughters, all of whom entered religious orders. Their daughter Thérèse, who inherited her father’s deep love for nature, was canonized in 1925, setting the stage for her parents' own recognition.

The canonization process for Louis and Zélie required the verification of miracles attributed to their intercession. The Church investigated the 2008 healing of a Spanish girl named Carmen, for which eight doctors found no scientific explanation. This miracle, alongside the earlier cure of an Italian child, paved the way for their joint canonization by Pope Francis in October 2015. They remain the first married couple in Catholic history to be canonized together, a testament to their enduring influence on the Church and their role as the parents of a saint.
