How a decade of televised romance culminated in a high-stakes summer
In short: After ten years of villa drama, the twelfth series of Love Island arrived with a massive anniversary celebration. From unexpected cast replacements to a victory decided by a public vote, the 2025 season promised more twists, more bombshells, and more heartbreak than ever before.
The twelfth series of Love Island launched on 9 June 2025 on ITV2, preceded by a special one-off episode titled 'Love Island: A Decade of Love'. This anniversary special featured former contestants reflecting on their experiences in the villa, marking ten years of the programme. The season was hosted by Maya Jama, who returned alongside narrator Iain Stirling, and was filmed in Mallorca.
The production of the series involved significant behind-the-scenes shifts. Before the season began, the initial cast lineup was altered when 23-year-<0xC2>old Kyle Ashman, a water operative from Stafford, was removed due to a legal issue. He was replaced by 25-year-old Conor Phillips, a professional rugby player from Limerick. The season also introduced its first 'bombshell' just a day before the launch: 24-year-old Toni Laites, a pool cabana server from Connecticut, United States.
The mechanics of the show's coupling process remained a central feature. Upon entering the villa, the female contestants were presented with dating profiles on podiums, detailing the men's names, ages, heights, and quotes. The women had to select their partners by standing next to a chosen podium before ever meeting the men face-to-face.
The summer concluded on 4 August 2025, when the public decided the winners. Toni Laites and Cach Mercer secured the victory, earning 33.5% of the total public vote. They defeated the runners-up, Harry Cooksley and Shakira Khan, in a season defined by the production's promise of 'more drama' and 'more twists than ever'.
