The 2008 comedy that became one of India's highest-grossing hits
In short: Released in 2008, Golmaal Returns proved to be a massive commercial success. Directed by Rohit Shetty, this suspenseful comedy navigated a complex web of mistaken identities and accidental crimes, eventually becoming the sixth highest-grossing Hindi film of its release year.
Directed by Rohit Shetty, Golmaal Returns serves as the second installment in the popular Golmaal film series. The plot follows Gopal, played by Ajay Devgn, as he becomes entangled in a web of lies to hide a night spent at a friend's yacht from his suspicious wife, Ekta. This deception leads to a chaotic series of events involving a fake friend named Anthony Gonsalves and a real man of the same name.
The film's narrative complexity extends into a suspenseful subplot involving a murder investigation. Madhav, a police inspector and Esha's boyfriend, suspects Gopal's company, Golden Fisheries, of drug smuggling. The tension escalates when a colleague, Subodh, is found dead, and Gopal is eventually arrested. The resolution reveals a conspiracy by Sawant to frame Gopal to protect an illegal drug trade.
The production of the film saw significant shifts; while originally intended for a forty-day shoot in Dubai, the cast instead filmed in Goa over twenty days. Additional filming took place in Mumbai's Filmistan Studios, South Africa, and Bangkok. The film's musical elements were also notable, specifically the music video for 'Tha Kar Ke,' which cost ₹3.5 crore and was the most expensive Bollywood music video at that time.
Despite its commercial triumph, the film faced critical scrutiny and legal scrutiny. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 0% positive rating from 6 critics, with an average score of 3.7/10. Furthermore, in 2008, a legal complaint was filed by Shakuntala Bhatia, alleging that the story directly copied her husband Rajendra Bhatia's 1973 film, Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar.
