The Maker is a genius who turned into a villain after his world broke
In short: Originally a brilliant, altruistic version of Mister Fantastic, the Maker represents a dark path for one of Marvel's greatest minds. After enduring profound trauma and the collapse of his native dimension, this alternate Reed Richards abandoned his heroic ideals to reshape reality, becoming a persistent, multidimensional threat to the multiverse.
Born in the suburbs of New York City, the Ultimate Reed Richards was a child prodigy with an IQ of 267. His early life was marked by social isolation and bullying, which fostered a deep, solitary passion for science. After a teleportation experiment went awry, he gained the power of elasticity, transforming his body into a biological marvel that no longer requires food, sleep, or oxygen. His brain, similarly flexible, functions like a human computer, allowing him to solve complex problems with unprecedented speed.
The transition from hero to villain began after the Ultimatum miniseries, which left him emotionally shattered and disillusioned with his home dimension. He faked his own death and orchestrated the murder of his parents, eventually emerging as the Maker. Unlike his heroic Earth-616 counterpart, the Maker views his intellect as a tool for total control. He has spent centuries in the future, led genetically engineered superhumans, and even attempted to merge realities to suit his own vision of a perfect world.
The Maker's influence spans the multiverse. Following the Secret Wars event, he was split into an infinite number of sentient beings, each sharing a single consciousness. This allows him to operate across multiple universes simultaneously, teleporting between versions of himself and weaponizing resources from across reality. Whether he is manipulating the timeline of a new universe or attempting to conquer the Avengers, the Maker remains a chilling example of what happens when a brilliant mind decides that the world is a problem to be solved through malice rather than altruism.
