The Himalayan sanctuary where humanity began its second chapter
In short: Deep in the Kullu Valley, the town of Manali stands as a gateway to the high peaks. Local legend suggests this is not merely a mountain retreat, but the very place where the progenitor of mankind stepped off his ark to restart life.
Manali’s identity is inextricably linked to Hindu cosmology. The town’s name is believed to be a derivative of 'Manu-Alaya', meaning 'the abode of Manu'. According to tradition, the sage Manu, the progenitor of humanity, arrived here following a great flood that ended a cyclic age. This mythic significance is anchored by an ancient temple in an old village dedicated specifically to him.
Beyond its mythological roots, Manali has historically functioned as a vital node in an ancient trade network. It served as the starting point for routes traversing Lahaul and Ladakh, crossing the Karakoram Pass to reach the Tarim Basin in China, including the cities of Yarkand and Hotan. This legacy of movement continues today, as the town serves as a gateway to the Lahaul and Spiti districts and the city of Leh in Ladakh.
The landscape is also defined by a unique architectural and spiritual heritage. The region, often called the 'Valley of the Gods', features notable structures like the 16th-century Hidimba Devi Temple, a wooden shrine with pagoda-style architecture dedicated to the wife of Bhima. Other significant sites include the Ghatotkacha Temple and the Vashisht Temple, the latter of which is famous for its sulphurous hot springs.
However, this mountain sanctuary faces modern pressures. While the town has grown from a trading village to a significant destination—with population estimates reaching approximately 11,700 by 2025—it faces challenges from unplanned construction and heavy monsoon-driven landslides. Recent severe weather in the Mandi district has caused significant damage to infrastructure, highlighting the delicate balance of life in the narrow Himalayan terrain.
