In short: Formed in 2000, the Atlanta-based heavy metal outfit Mastodon transitioned from independent EPs to major label success. Their journey through nine studio albums reveals a steady climb up the Billboard charts, moving from underground roots to significant commercial presence in the heavy metal scene.

In 2000, Atlanta, Georgia, saw the birth of Mastodon when Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher teamed up with Brann Dailor, Troy Sanders, and bassist/vocalist Sanders. Their early output was defined by independent releases, including the 2001 extended plays Slick Leg and Lifesblood. This period laid the groundwork for their first full-length studio album, Remission, released in 2002. The group's initial members included guitarist Brent Hinds and guitarist Bill Kelliher. Drummer Brann Dailor also joined the founding lineup. These musicians originally formed the ensemble in 2000.

The band's trajectory shifted significantly with their second studio album, Leviathan, released in August 2004. By 2006, Mastodon was diversifying their catalog with a compilation of their early EPs, titled Call of the Mastodon, and a video album, The Workhorse Chronicles. This year also marked their major label debut, Blood Mountain, via Reprise Records, which reached number 32 on the Billboard 200 chart.

As their discography expanded through the following decade, the band maintained a consistent presence on the Billboard 200. Following the release of Crack the Skye in 2009, they achieved significant chart milestones with The Hunter (number 10), Emperor of Sand (number 6), and Hushed and Grim (number 20) in 2021. Their cumulative body of work now encompasses nine studio albums, two live albums, three compilations, and various singles and music videos. The group also released Once More 'Round the Sun in 2014. This record reached number 7 on the Billboard 200 chart.
