How a 2006 superhero game let players decide the fate of the Marvel Universe
In short: Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was more than a standard brawler. By allowing players to complete optional missions, the game featured multiple endings that fundamentally altered the Marvel Universe. From saving mutants from extinction to determining the political future of Atlantis, your choices dictated the long-term consequences for the entire comic book world.
Released in October 2006, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance was an action role-playing game developed by Raven Software. It followed the gameplay template of the studio's previous X-Men Legends titles, tasking players with assembling a team of four heroes from a massive roster to thwart Doctor Doom and his Masters of Evil. While the core narrative involved a global threat, the game’s depth was found in its branching epilogue, which was shaped by the specific optional missions players chose to undertake.
The consequences of these choices were profound. For instance, failing to save a S.H.I.E.L.D. computer containing data on the Legacy Virus resulted in the extinction of mutants, while rescuing Senator Kelly determined whether he would support mutant schools or force them into re-education camps. Other outcomes were equally dramatic: the fate of Asgard, the survival of the Shi'ar Empire, and the political stability of Atlantis all hinged on the player's performance in side objectives. These outcomes were presented by Uatu the Watcher in the game's final moments, illustrating how small tactical decisions could ripple across the entire fictional reality.
The game’s development was as complex as its narrative. Originally titled Marvel Legends, the project underwent significant changes, including the removal of planned guest characters like Link and Samus Aran from the Wii version. The game was released across nearly every major platform of the era, with each version featuring unique quirks—from the PSP's exclusive missions to the Xbox 360's downloadable content packs. Despite its critical success and a 2016 re-release, licensing issues led to the game's removal from digital storefronts in 2018, making the original physical copies a relic of a unique era in superhero gaming.
