From Bank of England economist to reality television contestant, the career of Matt Hancock
In short: Matt Hancock served in high-level UK cabinet positions, including Secretary of State for Health and Social Care during the COVID-19 pandemic. His tenure was marked by significant policy shifts, controversial procurement, and a high-profile resignation. Later, he transitioned from the backbenches to the world of reality television as a contestant.
Matt Hancock, born in 1978, began his career as an economist at the Bank of England before entering Parliament as the Conservative MP for West Suffolk in 2010. Over the next decade, he held various ministerial roles, including Minister for the Cabinet Office and Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. His early parliamentary work included serving on the Public Accounts Committee and acting as the UK Anti-Corruption Champion.
His time as Health Secretary, beginning in July 2018, became defined by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hancock oversaw the government's testing and vaccination efforts, though his leadership faced intense scrutiny. Critics challenged the lack of competitive tendering for contracts and the methodology used to count daily COVID-19 tests, which the UK Statistics Authority questioned. Furthermore, he faced criticism regarding the adequacy of personal protective equipment for NHS staff. In June 2021, Hancock resigned after it was revealed he had breached social distancing rules during an extramarital affair with a departmental director.
Beyond his ministerial duties, Hancock was known for his early adoption of digital tools, launching a personal app in 2018 that faced privacy concerns. His political career also saw him stand for the Conservative Party leadership in 2019, withdrawing after the first ballot. Following his departure from the cabinet, he remained an MP until 2024. In 2022, he made headlines by appearing on the reality show I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, an action that led to the suspension of his party whip.
