In short: The final chapter of the Maze Runner trilogy faced a turbulent journey to the screen. Beyond the dystopian struggle for survival, the film's actual production was nearly derailed by serious on-set accidents and a series of shifting release windows.

Directed by Wes Ball and based on James Dashner’s 2011 novel, The Death Cure serves as the conclusion to a science fiction saga. The narrative follows Thomas and a group of survivors, including Newt and Frypan, as they attempt to rescue Minho from the WCKD organization. The plot centers on a desperate mission to the Last City to find a cure for the Flare virus, a conflict that ultimately leads to tragic ends for several key characters, including Newt and Teresa.

The film's journey to theaters was far from seamless. Originally slated for a February 17, 2017, release by 20th Century Fox, the schedule was disrupted when lead actor Dylan O'Brien sustained serious injuries during filming in Vancouver. These injuries were significant enough that production was shut down indefinitely in late April 2016. While filming eventually resumed in Cape Town, South Africa, in March 2017, the studio had to reschedule the release multiple times, eventually landing on January 26, 2018.

Financially, the film was a significant global performer, grossing $288 million worldwide against a $62 million production budget. This total was comprised of $58 million from the United States and Canada, with the remaining $230 million coming from other territories. Despite its commercial success, critical reception was mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film held a 43% approval rating, with critics noting that while the cast and action were strong, the screenplay and character development fell short. However, audiences remained more positive, awarding it a 'B+' grade from CinemaScore.
