In short: In the future, Medabots serve humanity, but their origins are far more primal. These artificially intelligent robots are powered by medals containing the coded memories of an ancient, war-torn civilization. When these robots battle, they risk losing their own parts, turning every competition into a high-stakes test of survival.

The Medabots franchise, created by Rin Horuma and owned by Imagineer, centers on a world where humans and robots engage in Robattles. While modern Medabots are mass-produced by the Medabot Corporation, their core components—the medals—are remnants of the Medalorians. This ancient society was obsessed with combat and armored themselves to become more effective warriors. When their internal conflicts decimated their civilization, the survivors encoded their memories onto hexagonal metal pieces, which now serve as the brain and soul of every Medabot.

The series follows Ikki Tenryō, a young boy who discovers a rare medal in a river. This medal powers his Medabot, Metabee, granting him access to the Medaforce, a powerful special skill. Rare medals were kept secret by the Medabot Corporation due to their immense power. In the manga, the Medaforce is described as a form of medal mind control, while the anime depicts it as a focused beam attack. These rare medals are distinct from the standard ones, which are cloned and mass-produced for everyday use.

The franchise expanded into a sequel, Medarot Damashii, which introduced Kilobots—dangerous, emotionless machines designed by Kam Kamazaki. Unlike Medabots, Kilobots lack personality, as their medals have been stripped of emotional capacity to prioritize raw strength. This allows them to bypass the traditional rules of engagement. The series explores the tension between these cold, efficient machines and the bond between human owners and their Medabots, highlighting the importance of the 'spirit' that defines the original, more human-like robots.
