How the Miami Dolphins Built a Legacy of Perfection and Enduring Rivalries
In short: Founded in 1966, the Miami Dolphins remain the only NFL team to complete a perfect season. While they defined dominance in the 1970s under Don Shula, the franchise has navigated decades of shifting fortunes, intense divisional rivalries, and a modern era marked by significant stadium investments and private equity ownership.
The Miami Dolphins entered professional football in 1966 as an expansion franchise, founded by Joe Robbie and Danny Thomas. They quickly rose to prominence following the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Under head coach Don Shula, the team achieved the only undefeated season in league history in 1972, finishing 14-0 and winning Super Bowl VII. This era established a standard of excellence, with the team appearing in three consecutive Super Bowls and securing back-to-back championships in 1973.
The franchise's identity was further cemented by the legendary career of quarterback Dan Marino, who dominated the 1980s and 1990s by setting numerous passing records. Despite this individual brilliance, the team struggled to recapture the ultimate championship glory. Following the retirements of both Shula and Marino, the Dolphins entered a period of relative mediocrity, marked by a long-standing absence of postseason victories that persists to this day.
Beyond the field, the Dolphins have been defined by fierce rivalries, particularly with the Buffalo Bills and New York Jets, often fueled by the stark cultural and climatic differences between South Florida and the Northeast. The team has also evolved its infrastructure, moving from the historic Orange Bowl to the modern Hard Rock Stadium, which underwent a $400 million renovation. Recently, the organization made history by selling a 13% stake to private equity investors, including Ares Management, at an $8.1 billion valuation, signaling a new chapter in how professional sports franchises are managed.
