How a failed hockey dream led to a 75 million record legacy
In short: Before he was a global pop icon, Michael Bublé was a Canadian teenager chasing a professional hockey career. He believed he wasn't good enough for the Vancouver Canucks, but a childhood passion for jazz standards would eventually lead him to the top of the global charts.
Born in Burnaby, British Columbia, in 1975, Bublé’s path to stardom was far from certain. Growing up in a Roman Catholic household with Italian heritage, his early ambitions were centered on the ice. He spent his youth playing hockey and attending Vancouver Canucks games, even aspiring to play alongside legends like Ivan Hlinka. However, his lack of professional-level skill redirected his focus toward a dream he had nurtured since age two: becoming a singer.
His musical foundation was built on the influence of his grandfather, who introduced him to the romanticism of the Mills Brothers and the jazz classics of Bing Crosby. This connection to the Great American Songbook became the cornerstone of his career. Interestingly, Bublé’s rise was fueled by grit rather than formal training; he never learned to read or write music, relying instead on raw emotion to drive his songwriting.
The transition to professional music involved significant struggle. To secure a deal with producer David Foster, Bublé had to personally raise $500,000 to cover production costs. His early years were spent working grueling summer shifts as a commercial fisherman alongside his father and performing in everything from shopping malls to cruise ships. This period of hard labor and small-scale gigs eventually culminated in massive commercial success, including over 75 million records sold worldwide and numerous Grammy and Juno Awards.
Today, he is credited with revitalizing interest in traditional pop. His 2011 holiday album, *Christmas*, became a seasonal staple, even becoming the best-selling Christmas album in Australia every year since its release.
