How Mike Elko engineered a historic turnaround for Texas A&M football
In short: Before becoming the head coach at Texas A&M, Mike Elko spent over a decade refining his defensive philosophy under Dave Clawson. His journey from a standout high school quarterback in New Jersey to the architect of a historic 2025 season reveals the methodical rise of a modern college football strategist.
Born in 1977, Mike Elko’s path to coaching began as a player at the University of Pennsylvania, where he contributed to an Ivy League championship in 1998. His coaching identity was forged during a 12-season partnership with Dave Clawson, spanning stints at Fordham, Richmond, Bowling Green, and Wake Forest. By 2016, his defensive schemes at Wake Forest had propelled the team into the top 20 of several key NCAA Division I statistical categories, including sacks and scoring defense.
Elko’s reputation as a defensive specialist grew through high-profile roles at Notre Dame and Texas A&M. At Notre Dame, he was credited with stabilizing a defense that had previously struggled significantly. His transition to head coaching at Duke in 2022 yielded immediate results, including a 9–4 record and a Military Bowl victory in his debut season. This success paved the way for his return to Texas A&M as head coach in 2023.
The 2025 season marked a pinnacle for Elko at Texas A&M. He led the team to an 11–0 start—the program's best since 1992—and achieved a No. 3 ranking in the Associated Press poll, the school's highest in three decades. A defining moment occurred on November 15, when the team overcame a 27-point deficit to defeat South Carolina 31–30, defying a statistical trend where SEC teams had lost 366 consecutive games when trailing by such a margin. Despite a late-season loss to the Texas Longhorns, Elko secured the program’s first-ever College Football Playoff appearance, finishing the season with an 11–2 record and a contract extension through 2031.
