From addiction and debt to the center of political controversy
In short: Before becoming a prominent political activist and the face of MyPillow, Mike Lindell navigated a turbulent personal life marked by gambling and drug addiction. Today, his influence spans from manufacturing to high-stakes political campaigns and the promotion of unproven medical treatments.
Mike Lindell’s path to prominence was preceded by significant personal struggle. During his 20s, Lindell experienced addiction to cocaine, which transitioned to crack cocaine in the 1990s. These dependencies, alongside a developing gambling addiction, led to severe financial and personal consequences, including the loss of his home to foreclosure and a divorce. He credits his 2009 recovery to prayer.
In 2004, Lindell invented MyPillow, a product utilizing interlocking shredded foam. While the company grew into a significant Minnesota manufacturer, it has faced substantial scrutiny. In 2017, the Better Business Bureau revoked its accreditation, assigning an F rating due to consumer complaints regarding pricing practices. Furthermore, major retailers such as Walmart and Kohl's eventually stopped carrying the products, citing low customer demand and market research.
Lindell has become a central figure in American political discourse, particularly as an advisor to Donald Trump. He has been a primary financier of efforts to challenge the 2020 U.S. presidential election results, promoting debunked theories regarding voting machine manipulation by companies like Dominion and Smartmatic. His activism extends to media ventures, including the development of 'alt-tech' platforms like FrankSpeech and Vocl.com, despite significant financial costs and technical challenges.
His political ambitions reached a peak when he announced a run for the Minnesota governorship in late 2025. However, his momentum stalled in the 2026 Republican primary, where he lost to Lisa Demuth by approximately 11 percentage points. Throughout his career, Lindell has remained a polarizing figure, simultaneously managing philanthropic efforts for addiction recovery and facing controversy over the promotion of unproven COVID-19 treatments.
