Miesha Tate turned a high school wrestling background into a legendary MMA career
In short: Miesha Tate began her journey as a fish out of water on a boys' wrestling team. She evolved into a world champion, becoming the first fighter to submit Marloes Coenen and a key figure in the rise of women's mixed martial arts within the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Born in 1986 in Tacoma, Washington, Miesha Tate entered the world of combat sports through amateur wrestling at Franklin Pierce High School. Despite initial struggles, she won a girls' state championship in 2005. Her transition to mixed martial arts began at Central Washington University, where she found that her wrestling background provided a natural foundation for the sport. After amassing a 5–1 amateur record, she turned professional in 2007.
Tate's career is defined by her technical grappling and resilience. In July 2011, she captured the Strikeforce Women's Bantamweight Championship by submitting Marloes Coenen, who had never previously been submitted in her career. Her rivalry with Ronda Rousey became a landmark in MMA history, as their 2012 bout was a rare instance of women headlining a major card. Though she lost that contest, Tate continued to evolve, notably out-grappling Olympic medalist Sara McMann in 2015.
Her crowning achievement in the UFC came in March 2016 at UFC 196, where she defeated Holly Holm via a fifth-round rear-naked choke to claim the UFC Bantamweight Championship. Throughout her career, Tate has been recognized for her ability to endure damage and fight harder, a trait she demonstrated by escaping multiple armbar attempts from Rousey. After a brief retirement in 2016 and a stint as a vice president at ONE Championship, she returned to the octagon in 2021, continuing to compete at the highest level of the sport.
