From stuntman to soap icon: the gravelly voice that defined a generation of comedy
In short: Before he became the face of a beloved soap opera landlord, Mike Reid was a stand-up comic and stunt performer who once lost a job for mocking Roger Moore's hair. His journey from London clubs to national fame reveals a man who used humor to mask profound personal tragedy.
Born in 1940, Michael Reid began his career in the 1960s, performing stand-up on cruise liners before finding work as an uncredited extra in television series like Doctor Who and The Saint. His early professional life was defined by physical grit; he worked as a stuntman on major films including The Dirty Dozen and Casino Royale. However, his transition into comedy on the 1970s series The Comedians established his public persona. As the only London-based comic in a lineup dominated by Northern English and Irish performers, his distinct accent and catchphrases like 'Terrific' made him a standout figure in British entertainment.
Reid achieved widespread fame in 1987 when he joined the BBC soap EastEnders as Frank Butcher. The character became a cultural fixture, known for a turbulent relationship with Pat Wicks and a tenure as landlord of the Queen Vic. Despite his public image as a jovial, sometimes pessimistic entertainer, Reid faced immense private hardship. In 1990, his son Mark died by suicide, followed shortly by the death of his granddaughter. Reid famously coped by burying himself in work, noting that his public laughter was a necessary shield for his private grief.
His later years were marked by semi-retirement in Spain and a return to television in the police drama The Bill. He also won a reality series, The Baron, which bestowed upon him a genuine hereditary title. Reid died in 2007 at age 67, reportedly from a heart attack, just weeks after receiving a clean bill of health. His legacy persists not only through his recorded comedy specials and film appearances but also through the enduring impact of his EastEnders character, whose eventual onscreen death in 2008 was marked by a week of tributes from the BBC.
