How a five-year visa ban redefined the career of wrestler Mike Bailey
In short: Canadian wrestler Mike Bailey, known as Speedball, transformed a career-threatening obstacle into a global odyssey. After being barred from the United States in 2016 for visa issues, he pivoted to Europe and Japan, mastering diverse styles before returning to the American stage as a decorated, world-class professional athlete.
Born Émile Charles Baillargeon-Laberge in 1990, the wrestler debuted in 2006. By 2014, he had established himself as a top independent talent in Canada, winning the IWS World Heavyweight Championship. However, his trajectory shifted abruptly in early 2016 when he was barred from entering the United States for five years due to work visa complications. This forced him to abandon planned bookings, including an appearance for Evolve, and redirected his focus toward international promotions.
During his five-year exile from the U.S., Bailey became a fixture in the European and Japanese independent scenes. He competed extensively for organizations like Revolution Pro Wrestling, Westside Xtreme Wrestling, and DDT Pro-Wrestling. In Japan, he formed notable alliances, including a tag team with Konosuke Takeshita, and captured the KO-D Tag Team Championship. His international experience proved formative, as he refined his technical skills and built a reputation for high-level performance across different wrestling cultures.
Following the expiration of his ban, Bailey returned to the North American spotlight with Impact Wrestling in 2021, where he became a three-time X Division Champion. His momentum continued into 2025 with his debut in All Elite Wrestling (AEW). Since joining the major promotion, he has secured the AEW World Trios Championship twice—first with Adam Page and Kevin Knight, and later with Místico. Today, he remains a prominent figure in the industry, balancing his AEW commitments with appearances in Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre.
