From auto-rickshaw driver to the helm of Maharashtra's political landscape
In short: Eknath Shinde’s ascent to Chief Minister was marked by a dramatic political revolt. After leading a factional split within the Shiv Sena in June 2022, he collapsed the Maha Vikas Aghadi coalition, eventually securing the party's official name and symbol through a landmark ruling by the Election Commission of India.
Shinde’s rise to power was catalyzed by the 2022 Maharashtra political crisis. During June 2022, Shinde and several rebel MLAs abandoned the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition, travelling to Surat to back the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This maneuver led to the resignation of Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and resulted in Shinde being sworn in as the 20th Chief Minister of Maharashtra on June 30, 2022.
The subsequent leadership dispute over the Shiv Sena name and symbol was resolved through multiple legal and regulatory channels. The Election Commission of India (ECI) supported Shinde’s faction in February 2023, citing its 2019 electoral results and legislative majority. This followed a period where the ECI found that 2018 constitutional amendments made under Uddhav Thackeray's leadership were undemocratic because they centralized party control.
The legal battle extended to the Supreme Court of India. A unanimous verdict was issued by the Court in May 2023, stating the Governor's demand for a floor test was illegal. Although the Court avoided directly reversing the ECI's ruling or disqualifying the rebel MLAs, it observed that the Maharashtra Legislative Speaker's recognition of Shinde's faction as the original Shiv Sena violated constitutional principles.
Shinde’s political journey began under the mentorship of Anand Dighe in the early 1980s. Before entering the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 2004, Shinde worked as an auto-rickshaw driver to support his family. After returning to his studies following his 2014 appointment to the first Fadnavis ministry, he obtained a Bachelor of Arts from Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University in 2020.
