From engineering student to UFC lightweight: the resilient journey of Nasrat Haqparast
In short: After witnessing a sparring session next door to his kickboxing class, Nasrat Haqparast abandoned his studies in mechanical engineering to pursue mixed martial arts. Today, the German-born athlete competes in the UFC's Lightweight division, navigating a career marked by intense bouts, unexpected injuries, and a significant shift in national representation.
Born on August 22, 1995, in Germany to Afghan refugee parents from Kandahar, Haqparast's path to professional combat was unconventional. At fourteen, he began kickboxing classes because his parents believed he was overweight. His transition to mixed martial arts occurred after he accidentally observed a sparring session in an adjacent room, a moment that defined his professional trajectory. His early training was prompted by his parents' concerns regarding his weight. This formative period set the stage for his future athletic pursuits.
Haqparast entered the professional MMA scene in 2012, building an 8–1 record before entering the Ultimate Fighting Championship. His UFC debut occurred on October 21, 2017, against Marcin Held. His career has been characterized by high-level performances, earning two 'Fight of the Night' awards—for bouts against Thibault Gouti and Esteban Ribovics—and two 'Performance of the Night' bonuses for wins over Joaquim Silva and Jamie Mullarkey. His early career was marked by a strong winning streak. He secured a victory against Marc Diakiese via a unanimous decision.
Beyond the octagon, Haqparast's identity has evolved alongside his career. While he previously fought under the Afghan flag, he announced on September 3, 2022, that he would represent Morocco, citing his training and residence there. His resilience has been tested not only by opponents but by personal loss, including the death of his mother in September 2021, just weeks before his scheduled bout at UFC 266. His professional journey has included various challenges, such as being pulled from a scheduled bout due to illness. He has also faced setbacks due to injuries and visa complications.
