The Rise and Reconfiguration of Israel's National Unity Political Alliance
In short: Formed as a strategic coalition for the 2022 Israeli legislative election, the National Unity alliance brought together former military leaders and political figures. Over its short, volatile history, the group navigated shifting loyalties, wartime governance, and internal fractures, eventually leading to a complete rebranding of the party by mid-2025.
The National Unity alliance, or HaMahane HaMamlakhti, emerged from a merger between Benny Gantz’s Blue and White and Gideon Sa’ar’s New Hope. Announced on 10 July 2022, the coalition expanded on 14 August to include former IDF Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot and Matan Kahana. Shirly Pinto joined shortly after on 22 August, and the group secured 12 seats in the subsequent legislative election.
In October 2023, following the outbreak of the war in Gaza, the alliance joined the Thirty-seventh government of Israel. Five members, including Gantz, Eisenkot, and Sa’ar, became ministers without portfolio, with Gantz and Eisenkot also serving in the war cabinet. However, the alliance faced significant internal pressure. By 12 March 2024, Sa’ar announced that New Hope would split from the coalition to operate as an independent faction, a move formally approved the following day.
The alliance’s participation in the government eventually faltered. On 18 May 2024, Gantz issued an ultimatum demanding a clear war strategy by 8 June. Although a rescue operation in Nuseirat delayed his initial announcement, Gantz officially resigned from the government on 9 June, with his colleagues following suit that same night. The alliance continued to evolve as Gadi Eisenkot and Matan Kahana departed in July 2025.
Following these departures, the party underwent a formal identity shift. On 2 July 2025, it was announced that the party would revert to its original name, Blue and White. By 7 July 2025, the Knesset House Committee approved the change of the faction's name to Blue and White-National Unity, marking the end of the alliance's initial iteration as a unified political force.
