A lotus-shaped gateway to the future of Indian aviation
In short: The Mumbai metropolitan region is undergoing a massive infrastructure shift. To alleviate pressure on the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, a new greenfield hub is rising in Navi Mumbai. This project isn't just about runways; it is a multi-phase engineering feat designed to handle 90 million passengers annually.
The Navi Mumbai International Airport project was first proposed in November 1997, but it took nearly three decades to reach fruition. Approved by the Indian government in 2007, the project was managed by the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The development required significant environmental and logistical coordination, including an impact assessment by IIT Bombay and a hydrological study by the Central Water and Power Research Station. To make way for the site, engineers had to divert the Ulwe River into the Moha Creek and raise the project site level by 5.5 meters.
The project faced complex hurdles, including land acquisition issues that stalled work in 2017. To proceed, 2,786 households across ten villages were relocated, receiving compensation and developed plots. The construction, led by Larsen & Toubro, began in August 2021 under a special-purpose vehicle between Adani Airport Holdings and CIDCO. While the airport opened its first phase in October 2025, the full vision includes three interconnected terminals featuring a lotus-shaped design and a capacity to handle 2.5 million tonnes of cargo by 2032.
Connectivity is a core component of the airport's design. It is being linked to the Mumbai Metro (Lines 1 and 8), the Mumbai Suburban Railway at Targhar station, and a proposed high-speed rail corridor to Hyderabad. Additionally, two new six-lane coastal roads are expected to be completed by early 2026 to link the airport to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link and CBD Belapur. This infrastructure ensures that the hub serves as a multimodal node for the entire region.
