The volatile career of a knockout specialist who refused to stay retired
In short: From a Florida football linebacker to a UFC standout, Niko Price built a reputation on explosive finishes. Yet, his journey was marked by controversial overturned wins, heavy fines, and a retirement that lasted only six months before a sudden, unexpected return to the cage.
Niko Price entered the professional MMA scene in February 2012, following an undefeated nine-zero amateur run. A native of Cape Coral, Florida, Price transitioned from college studies in criminal justice to a career defined by high-impact striking. His tenure in the UFC's Welterweight division was characterized by spectacular finishes, earning him four Performance of the Night awards for bouts against Alan Jouban, Randy Brown, Tim Means, and James Vick. Before his professional debut, he had already secured two knockout victories in the kickboxing arena. His athletic roots trace back to playing linebacker for Mariner High School.
However, his highlights were often shadowed by disciplinary issues. A victory against Alex Morono was overturned to a no contest following a positive marijuana test, and a 2020 majority draw against Donald Cerrone resulted in an $8,500 fine and a six-month suspension after testing positive for carboxy THC. These setbacks coincided with a period of intense competition, including a ranked #4 knockout of the year against James Vick in 2019. The Nevada State Athletic Commission issued his suspension following the controversial draw. These regulatory hurdles followed a period where he was also a nominee for the 2019 Fan's Choice Knockout of the Year.
The later stages of Price's career saw a shift from dominance to struggle. After a string of losses, including a 38-second knockout by Robbie Lawler in July 2023, Price appeared to reach the end of his road. He officially retired following a submission loss to Michael Chiesa on March 28, 2026. Yet, the conclusion proved temporary; by October 10, 2026, Price returned to the octagon to secure a TKO victory over Leon Shahbazyan, cryptically suggesting his career might not be over after all. His path to the UFC began with an eight-zero professional record, featuring seven stoppages. Even as he faced new challenges, he remained a prominent figure in the sport's heavyweight-style drama.
