Nintendo finally brings its legendary game soundtracks to a dedicated streaming app
In short: For decades, Nintendo guarded its iconic melodies behind physical CDs or strict copyright takedowns. Now, the company has launched a dedicated streaming service for Nintendo Switch Online members. It offers curated playlists, spoiler-prevention tools, and the ability to loop tracks for hours, marking a major shift in how fans access their history.
Launched on October 31, 2024, Nintendo Music represents a departure from the company's historically restrictive approach to its audio IP. Previously, soundtracks were largely confined to Japanese physical media or limited-edition game bundles. By centralizing its library into a standalone mobile application, Nintendo has created a controlled environment to showcase its intellectual property, effectively bypassing the need for third-party platforms like Spotify or Apple Music where its music was rarely available.
The service provides unique features tailored to gaming fans, such as the ability to extend tracks for up to 60 minutes and a spoiler-prevention mode that hides specific songs. Playlists are organized by character, franchise, and mood, with the app even integrating user game history from their consoles. Despite initial criticism regarding a limited launch library and the absence of composer credits, the platform has expanded significantly. By September 29, 2026, the library had grown to 144 soundtracks, with updates adding features like sleep timers and cross-platform support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
While the app has been a commercial success—surpassing one million downloads within two weeks of its 2024 debut—it remains a point of debate. Critics and fans have noted the frustration of 'special release' drops, which often include only a handful of tracks from highly anticipated titles like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. Nintendo representatives have defended the pace of these releases, citing the logistical challenges of managing such expansive libraries with a small team. Nevertheless, the service is viewed as a strategic move to deepen engagement, with leadership even considering future orchestral concert tours to further celebrate the company's musical legacy.
