How a Navajo golfer revolutionized putting and became a catalyst for tribal economic development
In short: Notah Begay III is one of the few Native American golfers to reach the PGA Tour, but his legacy extends far beyond the green. From pioneering an ambidextrous putting technique to founding organizations that foster health and economic growth in tribal communities, Begay has redefined the role of a professional athlete.
Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1972, Notah Begay III is of Navajo, San Felipe, and Isleta descent. His name, in the Navajo language, translates to 'almost there.' After a standout collegiate career at Stanford University, where he played alongside Tiger Woods and won the 1994 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship, Begay turned professional in 1995. He quickly made his mark on the sport, notably shooting a 59 during the 1998 Nike Tour Dominion Open, a rare feat in professional golf.
Begay’s professional career was marked by both brilliance and physical adversity. Between late 1999 and mid-2000, he secured four PGA Tour victories in just over nine months. He gained attention for his innovative putting method, which involved using a specialized putter with faces on both sides to accommodate different break directions. However, chronic back issues and a 2014 heart attack challenged his longevity as a player. Despite these setbacks, he transitioned into a successful career as an analyst for the Golf Channel and NBC Sports, while continuing his advocacy work.
Beyond the course, Begay has focused on empowering Native American communities. In 2002, he founded NB3 Consulting to assist tribes in developing golf courses for economic growth, and in 2005, he established the Notah Begay III Foundation to promote health and wellness among Native American youth through sports. His commitment to character and philanthropy was recognized with the 2026 Payne Stewart Award. Additionally, his entrepreneurial ventures, such as KivaSun Foods, have provided significant support to tribal food programs, including a 2015 contract to distribute over half a million pounds of bison products.
