How a fake commercial evolved into a cult classic parody of police procedurals
In short: Before it was a full-fledged television series, NTSF:SD:SUV:: existed only as a series of mock promotional advertisements. Created by Paul Scheer, this Adult Swim production satirized the tropes of action films and police procedurals. It ran for three seasons, leaving behind a legacy of absurdity that remains on indefinite hiatus.
The origins of NTSF:SD:SUV::—an acronym for National Terrorism Strike Force: San Diego: Sport Utility Vehicle::—trace back to a set of satirical promos. These initial clips were filmed as a backdoor pilot and aired during the first season of the show Childrens Hospital on Adult Swim. The mock advertisements featured Paul Scheer as the character Trent Hauser, alongside cast members June Diane Raphael, Brandon Johnson, and Rob Riggle. The concept proved successful enough that the network ordered a full 12-episode season.
As the program transitioned from a series of jokes to a structured show, the ensemble expanded to include Kate Mulgrew, Rebecca Romijn, and Martin Starr. The series officially premiered on July 21, 2011, and continued to air for three seasons, concluding its run in 2013. Throughout its broadcast, the show incorporated various special episodes, further leaning into its parody of high-stakes action television. Beyond its original American broadcast, the show found an international audience, airing on the Canadian version of Adult Swim and previously on G4's Adult Digital Distraction block.
Despite its cult following and unique comedic voice, the future of the series remains uncertain. In a 2014 interview, creator Paul Scheer confirmed that the production was placed on an indefinite hiatus. At the time, he noted there were no immediate plans for the show to return to the airwaves. While the series is currently dormant, it stands as a notable example of how a brief, experimental idea can be expanded into a multi-season television project, effectively deconstructing the conventions of the police procedural genre through a lens of black comedy.
