In short: In 1996, doctors believed Nwankwo Kanu's football career was over after a medical revealed a serious heart defect. Instead of walking away, he underwent a risky operation and went on to win Olympic gold, cementing his status as one of Africa's greatest ever footballers.

Nwankwo Kanu's ascent to footballing greatness was nearly halted by a life-threatening medical discovery. Following a successful 1996 Olympic campaign where he scored twice to help Nigeria defeat Brazil 4–3 in the semi-finals, an examination revealed an innate malformation of an aortic valve. While Inter Milan could have terminated his contract, club president Massimo Moratti opted to fund a risky surgical procedure at a specialist clinic in Cleveland. Kanu underwent the successful operation in November 1996 and returned to professional play in April 1997.

His career following the surgery was marked by significant achievements across Europe. He became a vital component of Arsenal's 'Invincibles,' the squad that finished the 2003–04 Premier League season undefeated. Kanu's versatility and scoring ability, often as a substitute, earned him two African Player of the Year awards, in 1996 and 1999. He remains one of the few players to have secured a Premier League title, an FA Cup, a Champions League medal, and an Olympic gold medal.

Beyond the pitch, Kanu's personal struggle inspired the Kanu Heart Foundation. Originally established to support young African children suffering from heart defects, the organization expanded its mission in 2008 to provide aid for homeless children. His legacy is defined not just by his 86 caps for Nigeria or his 44 goals for Arsenal, but by his resilience in the face of medical adversity and his subsequent philanthropic impact.
